MORE THAN 4,000 households in Sapian, Capiz availed themselves of the housing materials from the national government.

Information Officer Roberto Opina said that their town was a recipient of P10-million worth of housing materials from the National Housing Authority (NHA) as assistance for local residents whose houses were destroyed by supertyphoon Yolanda.

Sapian was also given 2,000 pieces of galvanized iron (G.I.) sheets by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), he said.

Opina said that the P10-million worth of housing materials from NHA include G.I. sheets, plywood and construction nails.

Opina added that because they did not have enough materials to completely rebuild the destroyed houses of our residents, Sapian Mayor John Arthur Biñas, upon consultation with the constituents, led the distribution of three pieces of G.I. sheets, three pieces of plywood and two kilograms of construction nails to each affected family.

Given the said materials were some 4,150 families whose houses were partially and totally devastated by Yolanda.

He also said that the housing materials from DSWD will be distributed to 1,000 beneficiaries not covered by NHA. Opina added that their municipality was the first in Capiz that had completed the repair of their civic center.

Funding support for said repair was given through the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) Recovery Assistance on Yolanda (RAY) amounting to more than P2-million.

In April 2014 in Roxas City, DILG Sec. Mar Roxas led the distribution of RAY funds to local chief executives of Western Visayas. Said funds were intended for the repair of public markets; civic centers; and provincial, city and municipal halls.
