Writers urged to take on journalists’ task

Special for The Capiz Times

ROXAS CITY—To celebrate its 33rd year of prominence in the local media for being “The Voice of the Capizeño,” The Capiz Times (TCT) hosted its Journalism Workshop on Oct. 17–18, 2014 at the Hall of the Governors of the Capiz Provincial Capitol here.

The workshop was the third in a row since its revival in 2012. Before the revival, the last workshop was held in 1999 during the term of Ms. Fe G. Villaruz, then editor-in-chief.

For two days, more than a hundred participants including some 19 members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) representing the 17 municipalities of Capiz were taught basic concepts in news writing, feature writing, opinion writing and photojournalism, among other skills.

Aside from the PNP, participants came from three college campuses in Capiz, namely: Filamer Christian University and the Capiz State University (CapSU) campuses in Dumarao and Sigma towns.

High school students who represented the biggest number—with more than 70—came from seven schools in Roxas City and selected towns, as follows: Capiz National High School; Roxas City School for Philippine Craftsmen; and St. Mary’s Academy of Capiz, all of Roxas City; and Comm. Luis R. Asis National High School in Panay; Malonoy National High School in Dao; Pontevedra National High School; and Dumalag National High School. A lone gradeschooler participant came from Pontevedra Elementary School.

No less than Atty. Antonio Barrios Ortiz, the paper’s founder, graced the opening program. In his keynote speech, Ortiz underscored the essence of the individual in carrying out the journalistic task. Among others, he placed importance on the development of the young writer who needs to learn the ropes of the trade so he could best handle the hard task of seeking the truth not just for himself but for the rest of the community.

The assembly featured a big number of local and national media practitioners who provided input on the new categories this year including blogging, broadcasting and live TV interviewing.

Mr. Carlos Arnaldo, a freelance communication specialist who previously worked for international media entities and is currently based in Manila, shared his expertise in journalism and writing; while Dr. Cesar Yap, Roxas City councilor, wowed his young audiences with a humorous slide presentation on column writing, stressing on the necessity to write and the motivations in doing it.

It also highlighted a number of resource speakers who shared their best practices to the participants. First, Jose Arsenio Quinzon briefed the students on the basic concepts in journalism and beat reporting. He was backed by Pagbag-o editor Gerry Pagharion, who also shared tips in journalistic ethics and writing. Then, Mr. Glenn Beup, Pueblo de Panay consultant, shed light on journalistic ethics, using examples based on his experiences as a media practitioner in and outside Capiz.

Meanwhile, Mr. Niño Manaog led the students in learning a style-sheet, a set of proofreading marks and revision symbols which they can use in reading their own copies for publication. Most important, Manaog allowed the participants to correct a sample article using said stylesheet. Manaog also lectured on feature writing, editorial writing and photojournalism, using articles published in TCT in the past year.

Other resource speakers included TCT columnist Mr. Christian George Acevedo, who shared his blogging expertise and Mr. Joey Balatayo, adviser of The Quest, the official paper of the CapSU Roxas City Main Campus, who presented his layouting and publication techniques.

Members of the local broadcast media likewise gave input on the new segments of the workshop, as follows: Mr. Donnie Degala, anchorman at DYOW Bombo Radyo Roxas lectured on covering sports; Mr. Rexam Laguda, OIC manager of IBC-dyJJ, presented the basics in broadcasting for both radio and TV formats; and Mr. Allen Hervias, host of the Capiz Provincial Press Bureau’s “Pag-ulikid” TV program, assisted young enthusiasts on live interviewing; their actual lecture-workshop was aired live on WESFARDELL, a local cable TV channel.

And for the second time, SPO1 Donna Asmod of the Capiz Provincial Police Office provided the participants community-based police awareness, and also gave them rules of thumb on media and community relations. Asmod also led the 18-member PNP delegation who studied the courses along with their younger counterparts.

Toward the end of the second day, Manaog led the discussions on photojournalism, which allowed some participants to show their prowess in the said field. Despite the time constraint, the photojournalism workshop gathered six entries which were later posted on Facebook. The top three winners were announced on Oct. 31 via an update on TCT’s Facebook account.

All programs and workshops for the two-day summit were hosted by Ms. Dolly Buday, the producer host of “Today with Dolly,” a TV magazine aired on Alto Cable.

This capability-building initiative gained the full support from the Capiz provincial government led by Gov. Victor Tanco, Sr. and Vice-Gov. Esteban Evan Contreras; the Roxas City government headed by Mayor Angel Alan Celino; CPPO headed by Police Supt. Ulysses Caton; and the Metro Roxas Water District led by Engr. Glenn Gonzalo Delgado.
