In recent weeks, after the tragic chapter in the lives of the Capiznons named Yolanda, things have started looking up in our part of the world. Out of the million dollars worth of relief goods, services and pledges poured in to the Philippines by many foreign countries and countless nongovernment entities, we have realized how we have not really been alone in this tragedy.

In all, we have rather seen that the world also suffered with us—people from all walks of life, political and religious persuasions have expressed their support and in fact extended material assistance to us and to the least of our constituents. All these outpouring sympathy and unquantifi able comfort should have been enough to tell us to move on.

In recent days, in particular, we have seen how our burgeoning city continues to fl ourish in commerce and business. A new mall is opening soon and another one is soon to rise in the peripheries of the business district in the coming years. Some of us will look to the future with more livelihoods and jobs in the city.

Yes, we may say progress brings in not prosperity but a lot of trash. It is sad truth, however, that we have consistently sustained our attitude toward treating our
environment.

Months past, the city launched efforts to lead a solid waste management
program in Brgy. Banica but since then we have never heard what happened to these said efforts. We see that there is a need to reinforce the “Tupad Ko, Tinglo Ko” campaign among the neighbourhoods in the city barangays and into the towns and poblacions.

Along Lawaan Avenue, just after Albar terminal, businesses from a hotel complex dump all thinkable garbage on the roadside. Across the city streets and in the Teodoro Arcenas Trade Center or Lipunan market, garbage of all possible and imaginable sizes stink; and sewers are also clogged big time. We will not wonder if the city is fl ooded at the onset of the rainy season months from now.
